Departure is from El Calafate. Going around the town, the excursion goes into the Estancia 25 de Mayo Natural Reserve (surface: 16,000 hectares), which borders with El Calafate town and the Chilean frontier. The safari schedule includes several stops, which will allow the group to participate in geological interpretations of the area, observe marine fossils and watch guanacos, among other species from native fauna, and learn about the contemporary rural life. Excellent photo opportunities of landscapes and wildlife.
The trip shows the location where the Villaba family, early settlers of the ranch (“estancia”) used to live. Then the circuit goes along the flow of the Calafate stream. As the trip goes upwards, you can observe the notorious difference in flora according to the height. Above 1,000 meters high, a strong change takes place. Towards the Chilean border, there is a stunning panoramic view of the Baguales and Centinela mountains, the summits representing the border between Argentina and Chile. Once back in the canyon (“quebrada”), it is time to taste a country stew, homemade bread and country cheese at “La sección”, a site where the “baqueanos” used to stop by at the times they were herding cattle in this area. After lunch, return to El Calafate.
