Ice Trek on the Torre Glacier is a
classic of El Chalten, the Ice Trek is specially designed
for those trekkers who are not mountaineers, but are
looking for a chance of walking on ice and an introduction
to ice climbing.
This program is offered to anyone over 15 years of
age in good shape.
You will spend around 3 hours on the ice, getting
close to one of the most spectacular panoramas of Patagonia
– the south face of Cerro Torre, Torre Egger and
Standhard, and other peaks such as Bifida, Hombre Sentado
Pass, and an unusual view of the west face of the Fitz
The services start in Chaltén and end at Cerro
Torre’s base camp (Thorwood), about two and a
half hours of easy walking from El Chaltén.
Difficulty Grade: Difficult
• 07:00 hs: Start of the walk following
Fitz Roy river’s valley. Arriving at Thorwood
base camp, next to Lake Torre. Walking distance 10 km,
2 and a half hours.
• 09:00 hs: Thorwood camp, crampon an harness
• 10:00 hs: The hikes continues around
lake Torre, and across river Fitz Roy by means of a
tyrolean rope. Following the rim of the moraine until
dropping on the surface of Grande Glacier.
• On the Ice: Basic Glacier travel procedures,
glacier behaviour and basic ice climb practice.
• 17:00 hs: Return to camp, Snack (tea, coffee,
cookies) . End of our services.
If you wish to cut this long day, one or two camping
night options are available.
This allows you to explore further the surroundings
of Cerro Torre base camp, and Lake Torre, enjoy unique
views of Cerro Torre in different light conditions.
Camping option include main meals, double tents, sleeping
bags, and insulating mats.
ALL INCLUSIVE GLACIER TREKKING
One night camping in Thorwood camp, either the previous
day as the ice walk. The meeting with the guide will
always be at 0900 am at the campsite.
Or one night after the ice walk to rest and enjoy the
